We are tremendously excited to highlight the JLDOC Community Focus Project, selected in the Spring of 2008. We have partnered with the Durham Performance Learning Center ("DPLC"), and the project's theme is "Students Back."
The DPLC is an alternative high school run by the Durham Public Schools for students who wish to acquire their high school diploma outside of the traditional high school system. It offers students the opportunity for online learning with internships and job shadowing in a unique setting. The DPLC opened in August, 2007 in the basement of Northgate Mall and features small classes where students work online at their own pace. Some 110-120 students are presently enrolled. For further information, please refer to their website, www.dplc.dpsnc.net.
We believe we have found an appropriate match in our partnership with the DPLC. Our "Bringing Students Back" initiative fits with our stated focus of 'helping children develop to their full potential' but also accommodates the needs and preferences of our diverse membership. Many opportunities exist to be involved, and we are calling on our active members and sustainers to embrace these opportunities and get involved with the Center and the amazing students it serves.
We are actively seeking volunteers to join us in the following efforts: - Mentoring (for details, please click here) - Tutoring* - Community Baskets (drives for books, school supplies, polos, etc.) - Seminars (health and wellness, public speaking) - Fitness Class - Special Treat Days (on a monthly basis) - Internship Opportunities (for details, please click here)
To learn more about these volunteer opportunities, please contact Chair Christina Gaither. We welcome your ideas and suggestions!
*Due to the regular student contact these tutoring placements require, it is necessary to complete a background check through the Durham County Public School System. Please contact Christina to complete this process.
THANK YOU for your interest in our JLDOC Focus Partnership with DPLC and for your efforts in "Bringing Students Back!"
